KCCC's JROTC students presented the colors at the Mount Vernon High School home football game this past Friday evening. This is one of many opportunities are JROTC students have to present the colors!
JROTC at KCCC is open to all students in the ninth grade or above looking for a unique opportunity. Students can take JROTC for one year or up to all four years of high school. The class is offered as a one period elective, and there is no military commitment associated with JROTC.
Students participated in a "Guess It" game during lunch at KCCC yesterday! They had to guess how many pieces of candy were in each bin. The closest guess to the number of pieces in the bin won all of the candy from that bin. Ana Pore (JR) from Hospitality, Bryson Shaffner (SR) from Building Trades, and Laura Lonsinger (SR) from Health Technologies were each winners from their respective lunch periods.
Mrs. Marhefka, Mr. Bellman, and Mrs. Henry visited with students this week to talk about PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports)! The 4 A's - Attitude, Attendance, Appearance, and Achievement were highlighted and students shared one of their achievements from the summer!

Dillon Boyd, senior in Precision Machining and four-year cadet in JROTC at Knox County Career Center (home school is Mount Vernon High School), earned his Private Pilot’s Certificate this summer.
Boyd earned his Private Pilot’s Certificate from the JROTC Flight Academy that took place at Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion, Indiana. The JROTC Flight Academy accepted 300 students out of 1,300 that applied and took place at different colleges and locations across the country.
In order to qualify for the JROTC Flight Academy, students had to carry a 3.0 grade point average, obtain a first class flight physical (medical certificate first class), take a variety of tests along with a fitness test, and obtain a Student Pilot Permit (similar to a driver’s license permit).
The JROTC Flight Academy ran from June 1 through July 27 (8 week program) from 7 am to 4 pm (Monday through Friday). The academy included six flight instructors, 24 students, and six planes (Cessna 172 planes).
The training consisted of half of their time in the terminal and half of their time in the hangar. Training included ground school, planning navigational logs, studying flight information, flying with our instructor, practicing landings, turns, high altitude maneuvers and low altitude maneuvers, and making solo trips in the air.
Boyd has family who served in the military and introduced him to flying. “I went to an Air Force museum with my grandpa (Terry Dillon). I thought it was neat and that really sparked my interest in flying. We both like aircraft,” said Dillon.
Boyd also won a Discovery Flight Scholarship through JROTC through Chris Cordle at the Knox County Airport. That discovery flight sparked his intrigue with flying as well.

Parents may drop off students between 7:30 a.m. and 7:55 a.m. in the parent concrete drop-off area by the flag pole (Parent Drop-Off Loop in black on the diagram with green arrows). Pull all the way forward, drop off your student, and pull out turning left.
Parents, please do not enter the bus loop to drop off your student, which is the blacktop drive closest to the school (purple arrows).
Preschool parents may begin using the parent drop-off loop at 7:55 a.m. High School parents should use parking spots rather than the loop after 7:55 a.m. to prevent getting stuck in the Preschool parent drop off traffic.
